SHERIFF MIKE POINDEXTER

I began my law enforcement career with California Highway Patrol after serving in the Marine Corps.  I spent 28 years with the CHP, 19 of those in Modoc County. I have been a motorcycle and road patrol officer, narcotics agent and canine handler.  While in Modoc county, I spent 7 years with the Interagency Narcotics Task Force and also served as a reserve patrolman for Alturas Police Department after retiring from CHP in 2006.
Modoc County will always be my home. We moved here in 1977 because this is where we chose to raise our four children; two of whom live in Alturas and are raising their families here. We have deep roots through our years of involvement in 4-H, sports, and community activities throughout the County. 

Mike served the last 19 years of his CHP career in Modoc County. He served two tours of duty covering approximately seven years as an agent in the Modoc County Interagency Narcotics Task Force. He proudly served as a reserve patrolman, for the city of Alturas Police Department from September of 2006 through May of 2010. On June 8, 2010, Mike became the Modoc County Sheriff- elect and was appointed by the Modoc County Board of Supervisors to fill the vacancy created by Gentry's retirement, on June 30, 2010. Mike worked the first three months of his first term as Modoc County Sheriff accepting no pay, doing his part to avoid layoffs, and to fiscally help the county get through some very difficult times. Mike continues to not accept retirement or benefits from the county saving the general fund over $200,000.00 in his first term.

Mike has been married to his lovely wife Kelley for 31 years. Mike and Kelley raised their four children in Modoc County while enjoying the beautiful rural and secure life style Modoc County has to offer. Their three daughters each expanded on the great education they received in Modoc County. April earning a Master’s Degree from San Diego State University, Danielle, a Bachelor's degree from Sacramento State; and Niki, a Bachelor's degree from Simpson University in Redding. They are also very proud of their son KC. Who became a third generation United States Marine following high school in Modoc. He served in Hit, Iraq during the surge and was also honorably discharged from the Corps as a sergeant in May of 2009. We are proud to say that KC graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in December, 2009. He has managed to work his way home and is currently assigned to the Alturas CHP Office. KC, says he wants his children to have the same opportunities and experiences he had growing up in Modoc County.

Mike and Kelley have been, and continue to be, active in numerous community endeavors. They now have eight grandchildren and enjoy every minute they spend with them. Mike has not, and will not let politics enter into his decision making. He takes his Oath of Office very seriously. Be assured that Mike wakes up every morning determined to live by his promise to keep the peace, and protect the Health, Safety and Welfare of “WE THE PEOPLE” of Modoc. He is committed to do all in his power to keep Modoc County a safe and desirable place to live.
